The project "Interventions to reduce inequalities in access to screening, increase participation in the general population and in specific sub-groups was aimed at developing models to improve equity in accessing screening services, information and efficiency of screening programs. The project was included in the Integrated Oncology Program (PIO) - 2006 and financed by Italian Ministry of Health.
The study involved the following regions: Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Tuscany, Umbria and Veneto. The final document is now available online, and it summarizes considerations made on the subject and activities developed during the project.
The working group carried out surveys to evaluate whether and how immigrants screening participation is measured and to census specific strategies to promote access. Furthermore, some issues, although not specific-related to screening, were discussed in order to facilitate analysis and interpretation of quantitative data: Italian legislation, health inequalities, linguistic and cultural mediation, translations, and institutional communication.
In the end, the document aims to offer a more complete background of the phenomenon from different perspectives and it can be used by anyone involved in cancer screening as a tool to better understand the impact of these new populations on everyday working activities.
