On February 27 of this year marks the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control, the document of the World Health Organization (WHO) laying down the principles and objectives aimed at a concrete protection of public health in against the devastating health, social, environmental and economic caused by tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

The Convention was signed by Italy on 16 June 2003 and ratified July 2, 2008; ratification was authorized by the law n. 75 of 18 March 2008 on "Ratification and implementation of the Framework Convention for the World Health Organization - WHO - for tobacco control, made in Geneva May 21, 2003", published in the ordinary supplement no. 97 to the Official Gazette no. 91 of 17 April 2008.
